# Google AI Overviews

> AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown on some Google results pages, with links to supporting pages. A page needs to be indexed and snippet-eligible, and the site must stay included in Search's generative AI features (the default). Traffic is reported inside Search Console's Web search type, and snippet controls apply.

## What it is

AI Overviews appear on some Google Search results pages and summarise an answer with links to pages that support it. **AI Mode** is a separate, conversational experience aimed at queries that need exploration or comparison. Google notes the two may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links vary.

> **Officially documented:**
> AI Overviews are shown only when Google's systems decide they add something beyond classic Search, and so "often don't trigger".

## How answers are assembled

> **Officially documented:**
> Google describes two techniques. **Retrieval-augmented generation** grounds answers in pages retrieved by its core ranking systems. **Query fan-out** issues several related sub-queries across subtopics and data sources to find additional supporting pages.

Google also warns against creating separate pages for every fan-out variation mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses. That violates its scaled content abuse policy.

## Eligibility

> **Officially documented:**
> To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements, and no special schema.org markup or AI text files are required.

> **Officially documented:**
> Google's later AI optimization guide adds a site-level condition: a site "must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console" to be eligible.

Sites are included by default; the setting is the Search generative AI control ([Search generative AI control](https://geo.casa/ai-search/search-generative-ai-control/)). The older AI features page does not mention this condition.

## Measurement

Clicks and impressions from AI features are included in Search Console's **Performance report** under the "Web" search type. Since August 31, 2026, the **Generative AI performance report** also shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions on their own. See [Generative AI performance report: AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console](https://geo.casa/measurement/search-console-ai-features/).

## Controls

- Crawling for Search, including AI features, is governed by `robots.txt` rules for **Googlebot** — see [robots.txt](https://geo.casa/crawling-indexing/robots-txt/).
- To limit what is shown from a page, use `nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet`, `max-snippet` or `noindex` — see [Snippet controls for AI Overviews and AI Mode](https://geo.casa/crawling-indexing/snippet-controls/).
- To exclude a whole site from AI Overviews and AI Mode while staying in classic results, use the **Search generative AI control** in Search Console — see [Search generative AI control](https://geo.casa/ai-search/search-generative-ai-control/).
- **Google-Extended** controls AI training and Gemini grounding, not inclusion in Search — see [Google-Extended](https://geo.casa/crawling-indexing/google-extended/).

## Not established

- How Google selects which supporting links to show, or in what order.
- Whether structured data, page length or answer formatting change inclusion. Google's documentation says structured data must match visible text. It does not say it increases inclusion.
