# Online stores (Shopify and others): getting products recommended and cited by AI shopping

> AI shopping draws on three sources: crawled pages, product feeds and your live site. Keep all three reachable, complete and in agreement on price and stock. Write product pages that answer real buyer questions, and earn genuine reviews instead of inventing them.

This guide is for people who run their own online store, on Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom stack, and want AI assistants to recommend their products. It covers how AI shopping gets product data, and what to fix on product pages, feeds and the site. Expect a week to audit a mid-sized catalogue, then ongoing work to keep data in sync.

## The short version

1. Understand that AI shopping reads three sources: crawled pages, product feeds and your live site.
2. Let the search crawlers that feed AI shopping reach your product pages.
3. Mark up products with structured data that matches what the page shows.
4. Submit product feeds where they're accepted, and keep price and stock in sync with the site.
5. Write product pages that answer the questions buyers actually ask.
6. Earn real reviews, and never fake them.
7. Measure citations and AI referrals, product by product.

## 1. Know where AI shopping gets its data

Microsoft's guide for retailers on Copilot describes, step by step, how one AI assistant builds a shopping answer. Treat it as a description of Copilot. Other assistants document less.

> **Officially documented:**
> Copilot breaks a shopping query down using crawled web data and product feeds. In Microsoft's example, a product makes the top three recommendations because feeds show a competitive price and in-stock status. The guide adds that "traditional SEO remains essential because AI systems perform real-time web searches frequently throughout the shopping journey".

> **Officially documented:**
> On agents: "Without your live site working properly, the sale fails even if your feed and crawled data were perfect."

So you have three surfaces to keep healthy: the pages crawlers index, the feeds you submit, and the live site an agent visits to check out.

## 2. Let search crawlers reach product pages

Store platforms, apps and CDNs add bot protection. Some of it blocks the crawlers AI shopping depends on.

> **Officially documented:**
> OpenAI: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."

> **Officially documented:**
> To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet".

- Allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and at the firewall: [AI search access audit](https://geo.casa/playbooks/ai-search-access-audit/).
- Check that product pages aren't `noindex` and that variant URLs have sensible canonicals: [Canonical URL signals](https://geo.casa/crawling-indexing/canonical-signals/).
- Fetch a product page without JavaScript and confirm the name, price, stock and description are in the HTML. Headless stores especially: [JavaScript sites (Next.js, Vue and others): making sure AI crawlers can read your content](https://geo.casa/best-practices/javascript-sites/).

> **Officially documented:**
> Google recommends server-side or pre-rendering because "not all bots can run JavaScript".

## 3. Structured data that matches the page

> **Officially documented:**
> Google supports two kinds of product results. Product snippets are for pages where shoppers can't buy directly, and merchant listings are for pages that sell the product. Google says using both page markup and a Merchant Center feed maximizes eligibility, and some experiences combine data from the two.
>

> **Officially documented:**
> Microsoft's guide starts its technical foundations with Product, Offer, AggregateRating, Review, Brand, ItemList and FAQ schema types. Price and inventory should sync in real time between feeds and on-site schema, and values should match across feed, schema and what users see. It adds: "Ensure rendered DOM contains the same facts consumers see — never serve different HTML to bots."

> **Officially documented:**
> "Don't mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page." Google also does not guarantee that correct markup will appear in results.

Shopify themes and most WooCommerce SEO plugins output Product markup already. Check what is there before adding anything:

- Run several product pages through the Rich Results Test. Look for price, currency, availability, brand and GTIN.
- Make sure sale prices and out-of-stock states update in the markup, not only on screen.
- Remove duplicate Product blocks from apps that each add their own.

Whether markup changes AI citations is unproven: [Structured data and AI search](https://geo.casa/content-structured-data/structured-data-ai-search/), [Does structured data change AI search citations?](https://geo.casa/playbooks/schema-ai-citations/).

> If your feed, your markup and your page disagree on price, an AI has three answers to choose from. Give it one.

## 4. Submit feeds where they exist

Feeds let you state product facts directly instead of waiting for a crawl. Each platform has its own route.

| Channel | Route | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Shopping, AI Mode) | Merchant Center feed | Complements page markup (step 3) |
| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft Merchant Center feed | Feeds shape recommendations (step 1) |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI product feed spec, or a platform integration | See below |
| Shopify stores | Agentic Storefronts, managed in Shopify Admin | See below |

> **Officially documented:**
> OpenAI's product feed spec defines one row per item or variant. Required fields include a stable ID, title, description, URL, brand, seller name, image, availability and price with currency. Search eligibility is on by default but doesn't guarantee an item appears. OpenAI asks merchants to keep price and stock current and to update the feed when a sale starts or ends.

> **Officially documented:**
> Shopify announced in March 2026 that Agentic Storefronts give merchants access to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, managed from the Shopify Admin. "Products become discoverable in ChatGPT by default via Agentic Storefronts." Brands not on Shopify can add products to Shopify Catalog through an Agentic plan.

On Shopify, check the Agentic Storefronts settings and make sure product data in the admin is complete. Elsewhere, start with Google and Microsoft Merchant Center, then follow OpenAI's merchant documentation.

## 5. Write pages that answer buyer questions

AI assistants match products to the situation a buyer describes, not just to a keyword. Thin pages with a name, a price and three adjectives give them nothing to match.

> **Officially documented:**
> Microsoft advises descriptive titles that combine the product name with its key difference, and descriptions that lead with who the product is for and what problem it solves. It also suggests clear usage context, Q&A blocks that answer real questions such as sizing, and detailed alt text and video transcripts.

For each important product, add:

- Who it suits and who it doesn't, in plain words.
- Specs that buyers compare: size, material, compatibility, warranty.
- Shipping, returns and sizing answers on the page, not only in a policy footer.
- Comparison or buying-guide pages for your category. See [For content editors: writing articles AI answers can quote](https://geo.casa/best-practices/content-editor/).

> **Officially documented:**
> The guide warns against exaggerated or unverifiable wording, saying AI systems penalize low-trust language.

## 6. Earn reviews honestly

Reviews feed ratings in markup and in feeds, and they appear in the third-party content assistants read. Buying or inventing them is both a legal and a trust risk.

> **Officially documented:**
> Under the US FTC rule, it is a violation "for a business to write, create, or sell a consumer review, consumer testimonial, or celebrity testimonial that materially misrepresents, expressly or by implication" that the reviewer exists or used the product, or their experience with it. The rule also covers buying reviews and review suppression.
>

Ask verified buyers for reviews after delivery, show negative ones too, and mark up only the reviews shown on the page. On seeding mentions elsewhere, see [Claim: seeding brand mentions across the web boosts AI visibility](https://geo.casa/ai-search/inauthentic-mentions/).

> Products get recommended for the questions their pages answer. A spec sheet and an honest review do more than another adjective.

## What not to do

- **Don't show bots different prices or HTML than shoppers.** Microsoft says never to serve bots different HTML (step 3), and Google treats cloaking as spam: [Google spam policies](https://geo.casa/content-structured-data/spam-policies/).
- **Don't block OAI-SearchBot or Bingbot with a blanket "AI bot" rule** (step 2).
- **Don't let feeds go stale.** A feed that says "in stock" for a sold-out item fails at checkout (steps 1 and 4).
- **Don't mark up ratings that aren't visible** (step 3).
- **Don't buy reviews or pay for guaranteed AI placement.** See step 6 and [Before you hire a GEO agency](https://geo.casa/best-practices/choose-agency/).

## How you'll know it's working

- **Crawler access.** Verified visits to product URLs from Googlebot, Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot: [Verify AI crawler traffic in server logs](https://geo.casa/implementation/verify-ai-crawlers/).
- **Feed health.** Disapproved or warning items in Google and Microsoft Merchant Center. Fix data errors before anything else.
- **Citations.** Bing's AI Performance report shows which pages Copilot and Bing AI answers cite: [Bing AI Performance report](https://geo.casa/measurement/bing-ai-performance/). For Google, see [Generative AI performance report: AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console](https://geo.casa/measurement/search-console-ai-features/).
- **Answers.** A fixed panel of shopping prompts ("best X under $Y for Z"), run monthly, recording whether your products appear: [Measuring AI visibility by sampling prompts](https://geo.casa/measurement/ai-visibility-measurement/).
- **Revenue.** AI referrals and orders in analytics, by source. Reporting advice: [For marketing leads: measuring GEO and reporting it upward](https://geo.casa/best-practices/measure-report/).
