# Minimum viable GEO for one person with a few hours a week

> With little time, do the things platforms actually document. Make sure AI search can reach and quote your pages, fix your few most important pages, then spend the rest on original, useful content and a small monthly measurement routine. Skip special AI files and rewrite schemes.

This guide is for one person doing GEO alongside a real job: a founder, a solo marketer or the person who "also does the website". It assumes two to four hours a week. The first two weeks fix access and your key pages. After that, a weekly rhythm keeps things moving without a tool budget.

## The short version

1. Week 1: confirm search engines and AI search crawlers can reach and quote your site.
2. Week 2: pick the five pages that matter most and make them clear and complete.
3. Write down 20 questions your customers ask, and the pages that should answer them.
4. Each week, improve or publish one page that answers one of those questions well.
5. Each month, run your questions through two or three AI assistants and record the results.
6. Ignore tactics no platform documents: special AI files, mass rewrites, bought mentions.

## 1. Week 1: make sure you can be found at all

Everything else depends on this. It takes about two hours if nothing is broken.

> **Officially documented:**
> To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". There are no additional technical requirements.

> OpenAI: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."
>
> Sources: [OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots)

> **Observed in practice:**
> An August 2026 audit of robots.txt on 130 company sites found that companies making an explicit choice almost never blocked search crawlers. The authors call blocking search and training crawlers together the most common and most damaging mistake.

Checklist:

- Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools if you haven't. Submit your sitemap to both.
- Inspect your home page and two key pages in URL Inspection. They should be indexed.
- Open `yoursite.com/robots.txt`. Make sure it does not block Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot ([Configure robots.txt for AI crawlers](https://geo.casa/crawling-indexing/robots-txt-ai-crawlers/)).
- If you use Cloudflare or another CDN, look for an "AI bots" or "bot fight" setting and check what it blocks.
- View a key page with JavaScript off. The main text should still be there.

The full version of these checks is [AI search access audit](https://geo.casa/playbooks/ai-search-access-audit/). Hand it to a developer if anything fails.

> Being cited starts with being reachable. An hour on access beats a month of content on a blocked site.

## 2. Week 2: fix your five most important pages

You don't have time to fix everything. Pick the five pages that best explain what you do: usually the home page, the main product or service page, pricing, an about page and your best guide.

> **Officially documented:**
> Google's AI features page says: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."
>
> Sources: [Google Search Central: AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)

> **Officially documented:**
> Google's AI optimization guide says there is no need to break content into tiny pieces or to write in a special way for generative AI search. It advises making pages for your audience.
>
> Sources: [Google Search Central: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide)

For each page:

- The first paragraph says plainly what it is, who it is for and where you operate.
- Prices, specs, hours, locations and contact details are in text, not only in images.
- Names match everywhere: your brand, product names and company name.
- The page has a clear title and a date if the content changes over time.
- Add Organization structured data once, if your platform makes it easy ([Organization structured data](https://geo.casa/content-structured-data/organization-structured-data/)).

More on writing that gets quoted: [For content editors: writing articles AI answers can quote](https://geo.casa/best-practices/content-editor/).

## 3. Write down your 20 questions

This list drives both content and measurement. Use real wording from sales calls, support emails, reviews and forums.

- Mix broad questions ("best X for Y") with narrow pre-purchase ones ("does X work with Z").
- Next to each question, write the page on your site that should answer it, or "missing".
- Keep the list fixed for at least three months so results are comparable.

Why the wording matters: [Query fan-out](https://geo.casa/ai-search/query-fan-out/).

## 4. Each week: one page that answers one question well

This is where most of your hours go. Choose one "missing" or weak question and write or improve the page for it.

> **Officially documented:**
> Google's guide warns that a summary of existing content only restates information already available elsewhere. It recommends adding original perspective rather than recycling what others have said.
>
> Sources: [Google Search Central: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide)

- Answer the question in the first two or three sentences, then give detail.
- Add something only you have: prices, test results, photos, a worked example, a customer case.
- Link the page from related pages on your site.
- Publish one good page rather than five thin ones. Mass-produced pages carry spam risk ([Scaled content abuse](https://geo.casa/content-structured-data/scaled-content-abuse/)).

If you have an extra hour, spend it on one outside mention that is real: an industry directory listing, a podcast, a reply on a forum where your customers ask questions. See [PR and brand teams: how press, encyclopedias, Q&A sites and reviews shape AI answers](https://geo.casa/best-practices/pr-earned-media/) and, for what doesn't work, [Claim: seeding brand mentions across the web boosts AI visibility](https://geo.casa/ai-search/inauthentic-mentions/).

> One page that answers a real question beats ten pages written for a prompt.

## 5. Each month: check your questions in AI assistants

AI answers vary from run to run, so one check proves little. Keep it light, but keep it consistent.

> **Observed in practice:**
> In September 2025, Miaozhen Marketing Science Institute ran 2,025 queries on three Chinese models: five typical questions, 135 runs per model. It concluded that results reach basic stability only at 30 or more runs, and low-visibility brands need 60 runs or more.

> **Observed in practice:**
> A 2026 study of Pilates studios ran the same questions through vendor APIs and through consumer apps. Results could differ sharply: DeepSeek recommended the brand in 69% of API runs but 1% of app runs.

A one-person routine:

- Once a month, ask your 20 questions in the two or three assistants your customers use, in the app they use.
- Record in a spreadsheet: mentioned yes/no, linked yes/no, which page, anything wrong.
- Treat single results as noise. Look at the trend over three months.
- Fix factual errors first ([When AI gets your brand wrong: find it, fix it, prevent it](https://geo.casa/best-practices/wrong-ai-answers/)).

Method details: [Measuring AI visibility by sampling prompts](https://geo.casa/measurement/ai-visibility-measurement/).

## A weekly rhythm

| When | Time | Task |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | 2–4 h each | Access checks, then the five key pages |
| Every week | 2–3 h | One page for one question |
| Every week | 15 min | Glance at Search Console and Bing for errors |
| Every month | 1–2 h | Run the 20 questions, update the spreadsheet |
| Every quarter | 1 h | Re-run the access checks, review the question list |

## What not to do

- **Don't start with llms.txt or other AI files.** Google Search ignores llms.txt, and one study found no measurable effect ([Claim: llms.txt improves AI search visibility](https://geo.casa/tools-protocols/llms-txt/)).
- **Don't rewrite your whole site into "chunks".** Google says it isn't required ([Claim: content must be chunked and rewritten for AI search](https://geo.casa/content-structured-data/chunking-content/)).
- **Don't buy mentions or seed fake Q&A.** It is weakly supported and can be risky ([Claim: seeding brand mentions across the web boosts AI visibility](https://geo.casa/ai-search/inauthentic-mentions/), [GEO regulation in China](https://geo.casa/foundations/geo-regulation-china/)).
- **Don't trust tools that claim to show your "AI ranking".** See [Claim: GEO tools can see your rankings inside Google's AI](https://geo.casa/measurement/third-party-ai-tools/).
- **Don't judge from one answer.** Measure monthly against a fixed list (section 5).

## How you'll know it's working

- Access checks pass and stay passing each quarter.
- Your "missing" questions turn into pages, one a week.
- In your monthly spreadsheet, mentions and links rise over three months.
- Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows your pages being cited ([Bing AI Performance report](https://geo.casa/measurement/bing-ai-performance/)).

> **Officially documented:**
> Microsoft: "AI Performance does not measure rankings, authority, performance, or importance. It simply shows which content was cited."
