# Article structured data

> Google supports Article, NewsArticle and BlogPosting markup for article pages. No properties are required; author, dates, headline and images are recommended. Google says the markup can help show better titles, images and dates, and that Top stories eligibility needs no markup.

## What it is for

> **Officially documented:**
> Article structured data on news, blog and sports article pages "can help Google understand more about the web page and show better title text, images, and date information for the article". This applies in Google Search and other Google properties. Google also states that no markup is required to be eligible for Google News features like Top stories.

## Types

> **Officially documented:**
> Article objects "must be based on" one of three schema.org types: `Article`, `NewsArticle` or `BlogPosting`.

schema.org defines more specific subtypes, such as `TechArticle`. Google's documentation does not say whether those count as "based on" `Article`. The conservative choice is one of the three listed types.

## Properties

> **Officially documented:**
> "There are no required properties; instead, add the properties that apply to your content." Recommended properties include `author`, `datePublished`, `dateModified`, `headline` and `image`. The `author` should be a `Person` or `Organization`, with `author.name` and `author.url`.

| Property | Use |
|---|---|
| `headline` | The article title as shown on the page. |
| `author` | Person or Organization; `url` should identify the author uniquely. |
| `datePublished`, `dateModified` | ISO 8601 dates that match the dates shown on the page. |
| `image` | Image(s) representing the article. |

As with all structured data, mark up only what readers can see on the page ([Structured data and AI search](https://geo.casa/content-structured-data/structured-data-ai-search/)).

## Example

```json
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Article",
  "headline": "Robots.txt for AI crawlers",
  "dateModified": "2026-10-25",
  "author": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Example Docs", "url": "https://example.com/" }
}
```

## How this wiki uses it

Entries output `Article` with `headline`, `description`, `image`, `author` and `dateModified`. The author is the wiki as an Organization, and `dateModified` is the review date shown on the page. The wiki does not record original publication dates, so it omits `datePublished` rather than inventing one.
