# Claim: Duplicate content gets your site penalized

> Google says some duplicate content on a site is normal and does not violate its spam policies. Google clusters duplicates and shows one canonical version, so the others are filtered out rather than penalized. Copying other sites' content without adding value is different: the scraping spam policy covers it.

## The claim

> "Having the same content on more than one URL gets your site penalized by Google."

## Why the verdict

> **Officially documented:**
> "Some duplicate content on a site is normal and it's not a violation of Google's spam policies." Google lists common reasons for it: region variants, device variants, HTTP and HTTPS versions, sorting and filtering, and accidentally exposed demo sites.

## What happens instead

> **Officially documented:**
> When pages seem to be the same, Google groups them into a cluster. It chooses as canonical the page that "is objectively the most complete and useful for search users". The canonical page is crawled most regularly. Duplicates are crawled less often to reduce the crawling load on sites.

> **Officially documented:**
> In the Page indexing report, "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" "is not an error, but is working as intended, because Google does not serve duplicate pages."

Duplicates still have costs. Google notes they can confuse users and make performance harder to track. Crawling spent on duplicates is also not spent on new pages. The fix is clear canonical signals ([Canonical URL signals](https://geo.casa/crawling-indexing/canonical-signals/)), not fear of a penalty.

## What the verdict does not say

> **Officially documented:**
> Copying other sites' content is covered by the spam policies. Scraping includes republishing content from other sites "without adding any original content or value". It also includes reproducing content feeds from other sites without giving users some unique benefit.

So "duplicate content is never a problem" is also wrong: duplicating *other people's* content to rank is spam. Duplication *within your own site* is a canonicalization question.
