# Google Search Essentials

> Google Search Essentials has three parts: technical requirements most sites already pass, spam policies that can demote or remove pages, and key best practices. Meeting all of them still does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.

## The three parts

> **Officially documented:**
> Search Essentials covers what makes web content eligible to appear and perform well on Google Search, in three parts:
>
> - **Technical requirements**: what Google needs from a web page to show it in Google Search.
> - **Spam policies**: behaviors and tactics that can lead to lower ranking or complete omission from Google Search results.
> - **Key best practices**: a few core practices with the most impact on ranking and appearance.

## Technical requirements are a low bar

> **Officially documented:**
> The technical requirements "cover the bare minimum that Google Search needs from a web page". Google adds that very few technical steps are needed. Most sites pass the technical requirements without realizing it.

For AI Overviews and AI Mode, the page must also be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google's later AI optimization guide adds that the site must be included in Search's generative AI features in Search Console, which it is by default ([Google AI Overviews](https://geo.casa/ai-search/google-ai-overviews/)).

## Spam policies

> **Officially documented:**
> The spam policies describe tactics that can lead to a page or an entire site being ranked lower or omitted. One of them, scaled content abuse, covers generating many pages to manipulate rankings, "no matter how it's created".

The policy most relevant to GEO tactics is [Scaled content abuse](https://geo.casa/content-structured-data/scaled-content-abuse/).

## Not a guarantee

> **Officially documented:**
> Meeting all of the requirements and best practices "doesn't mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content."
