# Bing AI Performance report

> Bing's AI Performance report counts how often your pages are cited in AI answers across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partners, with the grounding queries behind them. Microsoft says it does not measure rankings, authority or importance, and trends cannot be tied to a specific cause.

## Metrics

| Metric | Definition (Microsoft) |
|---|---|
| Total citations | Times your content was visibly referenced or shown as a source in AI answers during the date range. |
| Cited pages | Unique pages from your site cited on a given day. |
| Average cited pages | Average of unique cited pages per day over the range. |
| Grounding queries | Key phrases the AI used when retrieving content that was then cited. |
| Page-level citation activity | Citation counts per URL. |

Time ranges: 7 days, 30 days, 3 months, or a custom range within available history.

## What it does not tell you

> **Officially documented:**
> Microsoft: "AI Performance does not measure rankings, authority, performance, or importance. It simply shows which content was cited." Microsoft adds that trend changes cannot be traced to a specific cause or event. They do not show the impact of any single update, model change or content edit.

So a rise in citations after you edit a page does not, on its own, prove the edit caused it. Citation volume also moves with the volume and type of user questions and with model updates.

## How to use it

- As an editorial signal: which pages are cited, and for which grounding queries.
- Not as a success metric for a single change. Use a controlled design such as [Does structured data change AI search citations?](https://geo.casa/playbooks/schema-ai-citations/).

## Compared with Google

Google's counterpart is Search Console's Generative AI performance report, which counts impressions rather than citations ([Generative AI performance report: AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console](https://geo.casa/measurement/search-console-ai-features/)).
